PTE Reading: Your Strategy Guide

The PTE Reading section lasts 29-30 minutes and tests your ability to understand academic texts. Key task types include Fill in the Blanks (both Reading and R&W), Reorder Paragraphs, and Multiple Choice.

Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing)

This is one of the most important tasks as it contributes to both Reading and Writing scores.

Strategy

• Read the entire sentence before choosing an answer
• Look for collocations — words that naturally go together
• Check grammatical fit: does the word match the sentence structure?
• Use context clues from surrounding sentences

Reorder Paragraphs

Step-by-Step Approach

1. Find the topic sentence — it introduces a new idea without referring back
2. Look for pronoun references (this, that, these, such)
3. Identify transition words (however, moreover, consequently)
4. Check for logical flow — cause before effect, general before specific

Multiple Choice Questions

• Read the question before reading the passage
• Eliminate obviously wrong answers first
• For "select multiple" questions, look for answers supported by direct evidence in the text

Vocabulary Building Tips

Reading scores improve dramatically with strong vocabulary. Read academic journals, news editorials, and scientific articles daily. Focus on learning words in context rather than isolated definitions.
