How Long Is a PTE Score Valid? What Two Years Really Means

A PTE Academic score report is valid for two years — but institutions can set their own expiry, and the date that matters is not always the one you expect.

The short answer is two years. The useful answer is that two different clocks can run at once, and the one that catches people out is rarely Pearson's.

The two-year rule

A PTE Academic score report is valid for two years from your test date. After that, Pearson removes it from your account and you cannot send it anywhere. There is no renewal, no extension and no appeal. If you need the score after that, you sit the test again.

Note that the clock starts on the test date, not the date your results arrived and not the date you first sent the report somewhere.

The clock that actually catches people

Pearson's two years is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Institutions set their own expiry, and many set it shorter.

Some universities will not accept an English test more than 12 or 18 months old at the point your course starts. Some professional registration bodies are stricter again. Visa authorities have their own rules, which may be tied to the date of application rather than the date of decision.

So the question is never just "is my score still valid". It is valid on what date, for whom.

Work backwards from the date your score has to be accepted — course start, visa lodgement, registration deadline — and check that date against the rule of the organisation that will be reading it. Not against Pearson's two years.

What this means for when you sit the test

Students in Dhaka often sit PTE far too early, reasoning that it is one thing off the list. Then the offer takes longer than expected, or they defer an intake, and the score ages out of a university's 12-month window with eight months still showing on Pearson's clock.

A reasonable sequence for most applicants:

  1. Shortlist your courses or confirm your visa subclass.
  2. Find each one's English test requirement and its maximum age for test results.
  3. Identify the earliest date your score must be accepted on.
  4. Count back from there, not forward from today.
  5. Give yourself room for one re-sit — results come in about two days, but a retake needs a bookable slot and realistically a few weeks of work.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Sitting the test with four months of runway is comfortable. Sitting it with three weeks of runway means a disappointing result has nowhere to go.

If your score is about to expire

Download and save the PDF report now, before it disappears from your account. It will not be accepted as proof once expired, but you will want it for your own records, and it is the best diagnostic you have when you prepare for a retake.

Send any outstanding reports to institutions while the score is live. Sending is free and unlimited within the validity period, so there is no reason to hold back.

If a retake is likely, start preparing before the expiry rather than after. Students who sit a second test cold, assuming they will land near their old score, routinely score lower — the format moved under them on 7 August 2025, and a score from before that date reflects a slightly different test.

A timeline that works

Take a student in Dhaka aiming at a September 2027 intake in Australia, at a university that will not accept an English test more than 12 months old on the course start date.

WhenWhat happens
September 2027Course starts. Test must be dated after September 2026.
By March 2027Visa lodged. Score must already be in hand.
January 2027Offer and CoE. Score needed well before this.
November 2026Sit the test. Inside the 12-month window, with room to retake.
September 2026Start preparation. Mock test to set the baseline.

Note what the window does. Sitting in June 2026 would have been inside Pearson's two years and still useless, because it falls outside the university's 12 months. Sitting in February 2027 would have met both rules but left no room at all for a disappointing result.

Common questions

Does the clock start on the test date or the result date

The test date. Results arriving two days later do not buy you two extra days.

Can I extend a score that is about to expire

No. There is no extension mechanism. Sit the test again.

Does sending my report again reset anything

No. Sending is free and unlimited within the validity period, but it does not affect the expiry.

My score expired but I saved the PDF, can I still use it

Not as proof. Institutions verify scores with Pearson directly, and an expired result will not verify. The saved PDF is only useful to you, as a record and as a diagnostic for your retake.

One thing worth confirming

Score requirements are not fixed either. Some of the requirements for Australian Department of Home Affairs visas changed from 7 August 2025. A score that met a threshold when you sat the test may not meet the current one, even though the score itself is still within its two years.

Before you rely on an existing result, check the current requirement for your own subclass or course, on the official source, for your own test date.
